Do you save money with a Disney and Universal Combo ticket?

Working out if you actually save money with a combination ticket has to be the number one consideration. But it is not a simple apples for apples comparison to work it out.

You have to think about your plans and how this might influence the tickets you buy to see which deal is best and I will work through some examples using a two week or three week Orlando holiday and will use FlordiaTix or BestofOrlando prices for the illustrations. The total prices and savings are based on a family of four with two adults and two children between the ages of 3 and 9.

Relaxed two week agenda

This is the easiest comparison to make and is based on a relaxed agenda where you simply want 14 day passes to both Disney and Universal.

Disney Ticket and Price Family Price Universal Ticket and Price Family Price Total Price for family tickets Combo Ticket and Price Combo Family Price Saving with Combo Ticket
14 Day Ultimate ticket Adult £409, Child £389 £1596 Universal 3 Park Explorer Adult £245, Child 237 £964 £2560 Disney and Universal Combo Adult £599 , Child £572 £2342 £218

The result here shows that you can save £218 by purchasing a Disney and Universal Combo ticket rather than individual park tickets. Not bad and could cover a good chunk of your car rental or food budget for the trip.

Split your time between Universal Florida and Disney World

For this scenario we are going to take a two week holiday and spend the first half in Disney World and the second half in Universal.

Disney Ticket and Price Family Price Universal Ticket and Price Family Price Total Price for family tickets Combo Ticket and Price Combo Family Price Saving with Combo Ticket
7 Day Ultimate ticket Adult £395, Child £375 £1540 Universal 3 Park Explorer Adult £245, Child 237 £964 £2504 Disney and Universal Combo Adult £599 , Child £572 £2342 £162
4 Day Park Hopper Plus Adult £393, Child £376 £1538 Universal 3 Park Explorer Adult £245, Child 237 £964 £2502 Disney and Universal Combo Adult £599 , Child £572 £2342 £160
7 Day Base Ticket (No hopper, no water parks) Adult £335, Child £319 £1308 Universal 3 Park Explorer Adult £245, Child 237 £964 £2272 Disney and Universal Combo Adult £599 , Child £572 £2342 -£70
4 Day Base Ticket (No hopper, no water parks) Adult £319, Child £303 £1244 Universal 3 Park Explorer Adult £245, Child 237 £964 £2208 Disney and Universal Combo Adult £599 , Child £572 £2342 -£134

By splitting your time evenly between parks the savings for a Combination ticket are reduced but still work out better value if you are going to visit both parks as much as possible in that time and include water parks. The only combinations where it works out better value to not take a Disney and Universal Combo ticket is if you weren't interested in the water parks and willing to reduce your Disney days right down.

An exchange rate of $1.30 to £1 was applied to the base ticket prices as these are only available to purchase in dollars.

Should you buy a Disney and Universal Combo ticket

If you plan to visit both theme parks and based on the comparisons made above we would recommend you do buy a Combo ticket package for Disney World and Universal as overall it will save you money.

How do the Disney and Universal Combo tickets work?

The reality is that you are not buying one "ticket" but instead purchasing a ticket package and therefore allows the seller to provide a discount when compared to buying your Disney World and Universal tickets seperately.

So in fact what you are buying is a Disney World ticket and a Universal ticket to be managed and used in the same way as if you have purchased them separately.

Example Disney World and Universal Holiday Plans

We talk about it constantly as a valuable tool for family travel planning but a good plan does make all the difference and it is especially true for your Orlando Holiday. You will lose valuable time each day if you are deciding which park to go to and then trying to book FastPass+ and other items in the park. Do this in advance and then maximise your time in each park. You can alway change plans if you need or want to but it is much better to start with a plan you can change than no plan at all.

These plans are all based around the travelbetter principle of breaking your day into three chunks of roughly four hours.

Mix them up

This plan is all about mixing up the parks across a two week holiday and assumes travel time on day 1 and day 14 of your Orlando holiday.

This plan is all about focussing your time in Disney World for a week and then Universal for the second week (or vice versa).
