11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy

22nd of May 2017

Self-catering Holidays are great for getting your own space, controlling when and what you eat (especially if you have fussy eaters), and taking life at your own pace. While your holiday provider will aim to supply you with everything you need there are a few simple, but essential, items you must take with you to make your self-catering holiday easier.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Bottle opener and cork screw

It takes a lot of work to run a holiday let. So I have some sympathy that the owners cannot check all the items each time there is a guest changeover. After all they have a lot to get through. Cleaning, replacing sheets, tidying up etc. all before the next guest arrives. Therefore, it is hardly surprising they don't notice the odd chipped cup or that the bottle opener is missing. But, just imagine that you arrive back at your accommodation one evening quite tired and hot from seeing some great sites. You just about managed to get the kids down to sleep and all you want to do is relax and enjoy that great local red you picked up, or perhaps a cold beer to cool down with. Now, you are going to be really unhappy to discover they don't have a bottle opener. You would scream out loud but it would wake the kids! To avoid this horror number 1 on our list of items to make you self-catering holiday easy is a bottle-opener. We'd recommend a combination opener like the one above that can be used on wine and beer bottles.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Portable Black Out Blinds

Those white linen curtains with the butterflies stitched on them look absolutely lovely in your kids room in your holiday let. Your kids love them and so do you. Well, until it gets to 9pm and the summer sun is still streaming through the soft white linen eliminating their bedroom helping to keep the kids awake and demanding your attention. Eventually the sun sets and everyone falls asleep. They sleep deeply and softly until about 5am when the now rising sun once again streams through the delicate white curtain and wakes them up. Before you can say go back to bed they are demanding breakfast. Therefore, number 2 on our list of items to make your self-catering holiday easy is a black out blind.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Oven Gloves

Sometimes they are provided, sometimes not. We've all burnt our hands at least once trying to use tea towels so the number 3 item to make your self-catering holiday easy is Oven Gloves. You can take an old fashioned set like the ones above or to save on space some small silicon grab mitts.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: knife sharpener

One of the advantages of a self-catering holiday is that you have the option to cook for yourself. You can take some time to cook up a great feast or just knock up a spag bol to refuel the family at lunch. Now while your accommodation will no doubt come with knives it is often the case that no one has sharpened them for a good while. So when you come to slice that onion all you find is a blade slipping off and trying its best to chop off your finger. It only takes seconds to sharpen a knife just before you use it so number 4 on our list is a knife sharpener. Really useful and it will barely take any space in your suitcase.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Tin opener

While the majority of tins come with easy open lids a few still don't and you may find this doubly true in a foreign country. Plus, as I just found out tonight, sometimes the easy open lid fails and you still need an opener. Number 5 on our list of items to make a self-catering holiday easy is the humble tin opener.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Scissors

This is probably one of the most useful items you can bring as apart from the obvious cutting of paper etc. they are a brilliant substitute for knives for cutting and prepping food. Especially if you are short on space. You will be surprised how straight a cut on a large pizza you can get with scissors instead of a pizza cutter. Number 6 on our list is a simple pair of scissors.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Swiss Army knife

Swiss Army knife or similar provides a good backup for the last three items. But more than that it can be useful when you are out and about. Number 7 on our list of items to make a self-catering holiday easy is a swiss army knife.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Toys

A few key favourites that you know will keep them busy or cheer them up should they get tired. A portable art set is also a great choice for quiet time, and maybe have a go at some colouring or drawing yourself. You'll find it very relaxing. Number 8 on our list is toys. One tip however is to take a list or pictures of the toys before you go to be sure you don't leave any favourites behind.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Portable bath mats

These are brilliant. How often have you put the kids in a bath or shower and found them slipping all over the place. Especially, when they share a bath. Therefore, take these easy to pack stick on mats and significantly reduce the risk of a banged head from slipping in the shower. Plus, these are great for business travel. After all I would rather be standing on these then on some smelly, well used, hotel shower mat. Number 9 is a set of portable bath mats.

11 items to make your self-catering holiday easy: Bin bags

Apart from the obvious use they can also be used as a bag for dirty clothes or a make shift waterproof cover for bikes and many more things. Therefore, number 10 on our list of items to make a self-catering holiday easy are bin bags.
