Aztec Hotel Bristol

Review of the Aztec Hotel in Bristol following our stay

Do you remember those days before you had kids and you used to go out shopping? You were free to browse whatever and wherever you wanted. Take your time, look at different things from each other and enjoy the whole experience. Maybe grab a late lunch and savour your food. Chat with each other and not have to clean the table and surrounding floor out of embarrassment for the mess made.

Well, a few weeks back Charlie and I decided we would recreate those magic moments and leave the kids with my parents (who kindly volunteered to babysit) and headed to Cribbs Causeway on a shopping trip. But also as a special treat we booked into the Aztec Hotel a few miles away from Cribbs and this is our review and guide of the hotel.

The Aztec Hotel in Bristol is a large four star hotel owned and operated by the Thwaites group. Thwaites are most well known for their brewery and Thwaites beer but have expanded into hotels and restaurants. It has a wide variety of rooms, a pool and if you really want to indulge and relax a spa. We had booked to stay in a standard room but on arrival were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite which was a very nice surprise. Read on for our detailed review of the Aztec Hotel Bristol.

Where is the Aztec Hotel?

The Aztec Hotel is in Almondsbury, Bristol. Not far from the M5 and found in the middle of a business park. The sort with a mix of three story offices and warehouses. Now, while its immediate surroundings are not the prettiest the proximity to the motorway makes it a great point to explore Bristol or stop off on your way to Cornwall. It can be reached via the M5 and M4 motorways so easily accessible from the Midlands, Wales, London and the South of England.

What are the rooms like at the Aztec?

While our room at the Aztec Hotel looked a bit dated it was very spacious and as it was a suite included its own little lounge area. This lounge space was a really nice place to sit in comfy chairs and chat together while enjoying a coffee. Plus, the coffee was good quality and even better we had real milk in the fridge. This was a really nice extra touch and just the sort of thing we love from hotels.

Swimming pool and spa at the Aztec Hotel

We didn't use the spa or gym at the Aztec hotel but we did make use of its excellent swimming pool. The pool was a good size for a hotel and also had set times for families and adults only so people could pick the right time to suit their preference. It also had a whirl pool, steam room and sauna all accessible from the main pool room. The changing rooms could have been a bit cleaner but overall the swimming pool was an excellent feature of the hotel.

What's the food like at the Aztec hotel

While we didn't eat our dinner in the main restaurant we did enjoy a quiet drink and light bite in the bar. The bar in the Aztec was a nice low lit area with several sections so those seeking space and quiet (or a break from their kids like we were) can find it while there are several larger tables suitable for families.

The bar meals all sounded very tasty as we read the menu but after a large burger for lunch we were not that hungry so opted for freshly made soup with a bread and dips platter to share. Both were very tasty and well presented. They also had a good choice of wine and of course Thwaites beer to wash it down with.

In the morning we went to the restaurant and took the chance to enjoy a more leisurely breakfast than we would have had with the kids in tow. We took our time with the buffet enjoying fruit, yogurts and a large cooked breakfast. The buffet was well laid out with plenty of choice and what’s more queuing was at a minimum thanks to toast cooked to order so no bottlenecking at the toast machine (it’s a British thing).

Overall

Overall the Aztec Hotel in Bristol was a great place for us to chill out and relax away from the kids. But while we were enjoying some kid free time we saw plenty of families enjoying the hotel as well so it really is a good choice for both couples and families. The rooms were large and the swimming pool was great. But what really made the hotel such a nice place to stay was the little touches. The nice coffee, the real milk in our room, milk and cookies at bedtime for kids and really helpful staff. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the hotel as a comfortable base to explore Bristol and the surrounding area and read on for a few ideas on what to visit near the hotel.
