Can I Take a NeeDoh on a Plane?

We recommend that you don’t take a NeeDoh stimming toy on a plane due to air travel security restrictions.

Read on to learn more about these restrictions, why we make this recommendation, and alternatives you can consider.

What is a NeeDoh?

A NeeDoh is a type of stress ball or fidget toy that is ideal for Neurodiverse children and adults to use to help with anxiety.

It is often made with a thick and sometimes textured outside in the shape of a ball or cube. It is filled with a PVA based liquid that allows you to squeeze the toy with a satisfying resistance that provides the calming effect.

Additionally, many people put their NeeDoh’s in the fridge or even freezer (for a few minutes) to provide a greater resistance to the squeeze.

All three of our children like to use NeeDoh’s and we too find them very satisfying to squeeze when you are feeling stressed.

Why we reommend you don’t take a NeeDoh on a plane

The main challenge with taking a NeeDoh on a plane is that it is a liquid based toy and many countries and airlines still have increased security restrictions preventing bringing liquids on board.

As a result, some travellers are finding that security staff at airports are refusing to let NeeDohs through and making people throw them away at the gate.

Not only is this a problem as you lose a much needed stimming toy to help with the anxiety and stress of travel but it will potentially increase stress and panic in your Neurodiverse child or yourselves.

Therefore, we recommend you do not take the risk and instead choose non-liquid based plane safe stimming toys.

UK Liquid Restrictions

Here are the current UK government travel restrictions for liquids. If you read through these you could argue that a NeeDoh is okay as it is a small amount of liquid and transparent, and many security staff may let it through.

However, it is debatable and will be up to the person on the gate so you are taking a risk if you take this approach.

Liquid restrictions in other countries

Even if you do make it through UK security controls with a NeeDoh this doesn’t guarantee you will be able to in other countries and they will all have their own liquid restrictions rules.

Therefore, you again run the risk of them refusing the NeeDoh and making you throw it away.

In fact, we’ve been looking through various travel threads on Reddit and other platforms and can see this is quite common.

What about a Mini NeeDoh?

A mini NeeDoh may have more chance to get through security as it is a much smaller amount of liquid.

However, this can’t be guaranteed so be prepared for it to be taken away and ensure you have at least one backup stimming and stress toy.

If you are interested in getting a Mini NeeDoh then you can buy them at Amazon (affiliate link) and in most major toy shops.

Alternatives to a NeeDoh that are Air Travel safe

Really, the best alternative to a NeeDoh for air travel would be any stimming or stress toy that doesn’t contain a liquid.

However, we understand that a non-liquid alternative may not have that squish feeling you are craving.

But, we have a identified a few options that we believe come close and may even meet that need in its entirety and here they are.

The above links are all affiliate links to Amazon UK, if you click on a clink and make a related purchase we may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. This commission goes towards the running costs of Travelbetter and enabling us to bring you useful content and tools to support Neurodiverse travel.

Can I still take a NeeDoh on holiday?

Yes, you can still take a NeeDoh on your holiday but be sure to pack it in your checked luggage to ensure it isn’t taken away.

Overall

Overall, trying to take a NeeDoh toy on a plane feels like a stress that can be avoided and you are much better to take alternative calming and stimming toys.
